barking and digging

Question
Hi. I have 3 dogs, one of which is a 2 year old JRT. We have had her since she was a pup. She is the most lovable and adorable dog, we absolutely love her. She is really well behaved in the house. However, there are three bad habbits she has that I can't break. #1 As soon as she is let outside in the back yard she becomes a terror. She barks at any animal she sees including dogs that weigh 10 times her weight. When i hear her barking I try to call her in the house but she is in such a barking frenzy that she is just tuned into what is causing her to bark. #2 When I go outside to get her she runs from me and hides under bushes or runs around the yard so I can't get to her. When she finally does come to the back door she crouches over and pees as if she knows she has done something wrong. #3 Her digging holes is another habbit that I just can't break. We have moles in the back yard and I think that she hears them running through the ground and she digs trying to get to them. If I can break her of these three things, she would be the ideal pet. Can you please give me some advise. I'd really appreciate it.
Thank you

Answer
Hello Francine,
Sounds like she is so happy to get outside into her "domain".  She feels like the queen out there and wants everyone to know it!
I suggest getting a training leash (15 or more feet) or even a long piece of rope or clothesline will work. Tie it onto her collar and then let her out - leaving the other end free.  Seeing she runs away when you try to get her (little devil!) you can grab onto the leash or rope and get her attention that way.  To correct any bad behavior you have to IMMEDIATELY address it when it happens. So, when she starts to dig, yank on that leash and yell NO! When she barks at something do the same thing. It's probably going to take some TIME and patience to change the behavior because these are two very strong JRT traits. It's in their DNA to want to dig, hunt, and bark.  You might not ever be able to stop ALL of it, but you certainly can tone it down a bit with the leash training.
Consistency is important. You can't correct her one day and then the next day do nothing.  Remember the correction has to happen almost at the same time she is doing the "bad thing".  She will connect the two eventually. "hmmm, if I start digging, mom gets mad and yanks at my head"...... stay consistent - which means you will probably have to go outside with her for a while, while she is learning.
GOOD LUCK!! Sounds like you have a great dog! :)
