Halo - Labour Problems!

Question
Hi Carol, Its me again. PLEASE help! I am certain that Halo is in labour, she has been crying, licking herself and digging the whole of yesterday. This is when I thought great, the pups are on their way. But nothing, I checked on her the whole of last night too, she was doing the same thing. This morning she is also doing the same thing but there is nothing. Can Halo be in labour for more than 24 hours? She also keeps going out to do her business but nothing is coming out, so the sensation is there. I am woriried and want to take her to the vet for her sake. Please help asap.... Thanks. Chenee

Answer

Enjoy your new little fur babies :)

Hi Chenee,

I'm not sure when you wrote this, our time zones are very different, but it looks like it wasn't very long ago.  Crying, licking, digging is the first stage of labor, and yes it can go on for a full day. Watch carefully for when Halo starts PUSHING - if the PUSHING stage lasts longer than FOUR hours, then it is time to intervene with the veterinarian.
This is a scary time for Halo as she has never been through this before, and it will take a little while for her to WANT to push - but nature will take it's course and things will progress.
If she still has not PUSHED after today, then take her in.

Make sure you take her out on a leash to do her business, don't let her go out loose because she will try to hide and find a secluded place to have the puppies. Keep her calm and quiet and in the room/bed where she will have the puppies. Try to relax, she can feel if your stressing out!
Pet her, stroke her, talk softly to her in her whelping box, let her know everything is OK and that you are there. Sit, read a book, be calm, but stay in the room with her. Let her get out of the bed, pace, dig, pant, whatever she needs to do, but keep redirecting her back to the bed (whelping box).
When she knows you are calm, and you are there, and things are OK, she will relax and start pushing. You can't stop nature! :)
If she pushes and water breaks, and still no puppy comes out after an hour of pushing, its time to take her in.  If any blood shows, take her in. If she is screaming/crying in pain, take her in. If she's just nervous, she's OK.  YOU'LL BE OK!!!
Keep me posted!
