Question
Hi i would like to know for how long is my dog still going to be interested in my bitch, jack russell. She bled for 2 weeks and he then just licked and sniffed her.Now  he wants to jump her constantly. My problem is that she is in her first season and we would like them to have pups, but only the next season. They live in the same house and it is impossible to separate them. She's been not bleeding for the last 5days.how much longer?

Answer
Good morning
It might already be too late! Unless you are watching them every single minute they probably already "tied". It is such a strong instinct it's nearly impossible to keep them apart.
The bitch isn't ready to mate when she's bleeding. Her most fertile time is AFTER the blood. The blood will turn pinkish, and then yellowish, and when it's at the yellowish stage is when she is MOST fertile.
Every dog is different - some are in "heat" for 2 weeks, some can go as long as 8 weeks. It's a very hard thing to determine until you've been doing it for years and you get to learn her cycle. If you don't want them mating you are going to HAVE to keep them completely apart.
You should also have "diapers" on both of them. They sell both male and female versions and it's a good deterrent but nothing is fool proof. Yikes! Good luck!
Do you have buyers for your puppies? Make sure you have buyers BEFORE you breed. There are so many unwanted Jack Russells out there already. If I can be of anymore help, feel free to write anytime. Good luck!!
