My Jack has bad breath

Question
Hi Carol,
You have helped me before and I am so glad I can come here again and ask your advice.
We got our JR from a rescue in August.  At that time, he was all checked out and had his teeth cleaned.  All was good.  I have kept up with brushing his teeth every other day.

About 5 weeks ago he had a tape worm and got meds for it.  Aside from that, he is healthy.

His breath is bad.  I am feeding him Hills oral care dry food, and a little Hills wet food with it at night.  (that is not for oral care).
I have been using Greenies, and Mrs Hubbard sweet breath treats.

Any suggestions?  He is such a love and wants to kiss everyone.  He is too cute to have bad breath.  : )

Thank you Carol.

Answer
The first thing I would say is get rid of the wet food. He doesn't need it whatsoever and all it does is stick to teeth and cause loose stools. I only feed dry dog food to all my dogs. It's good that you brush, most people don't keep that up, but it's important too that he CHEWS!! Give him all natural American made rawhide - one a day will keep him satisfied and also keep the saliva moving and the teeth clean and healthy. Rope bones and other chewables are good for the teeth too. The more chewing he does, the better his breath will be, but most dogs end up with dog breath no matter what you do! Some of it just comes with age. Medicines definitely change the breath too.
Make sure he's getting a lot of fresh water and give him a kiss for me too!
