Question
Hello, I've three dogs 3 year old Haylie a spayed labrador retreiver, *Luke a 2 year old male neutered jack russell terrier and Hannah a 9 month old spayed boston terrier. For the past year Luke has been driving me absoulutly NUTS! Here lies the problem:

We have a large yard the dogs love to run around dig/bark/chew/play the works. The proble  is my friend/sister/and her husband live above us they ahve a golden retrver/labrador rreteiver cross 3 year old Miranda, the dogs dont get along Luke will pcik at her and make her mad and the dogs styart to get into a fight because Haylie my lab thinks miranda is hurting Luke so it was decided early on that the dog had to have seperate go out times. Now on fine mild/warm days Luke will NOT come inside when called Haylie and Hannah avail and come after a short whisle or come in guys' but Luke will sit oppisite end of the yard and look at me with a sulk on his face. I say ok stay out close the door and bierng the tow dogs down stairs. I try a few minutes later to get him in as sometimes when he wants to stay out miranda needs to go out and he just cant play with her the way he plays with haylie without making her very mad I call and call offer treats holding them up and telling him to come ina dn he'll get it but it doenst work. Sometiems when he does this its very very cold out and when he wont come in at -20 it really sucks because I cant leave the door open to call him in for ten worthless minutes because its tooc codl adn if left out he'll freze. You go into the yard try to bring him in he will play chase with you and you can Not get him in, sometimes in the summer or fall I'd chase him around until he ran in teh door I left open but most of the time it doesnt work and come to the poit where my friend had to start taking miranda on teh front ayrd which is only sorrounded with hedges and no gate so he risks her running off alot even when he is there, I feel very bad for this because they were hear before we moved in and well its there yard too. Luke is very diobdient, although I walk my dogs everymorning, they are fed a good diet, given regular chews ans upplyed with lots of toys and time with me he still wnt listen to me whatso ever. The few things he listens to me for at, leave it alone go to your crate(all my dogs lernt this very easily now i just say crate' when I'm leaving the house point and they all go and nose open there crate doors and sit inside). he pulls like a sun of a gun walking and at times will slow down walk behind me jump slightly on my legs and then give all hes got and pull sritgh ahead several times i thought I'd lost his leash at the rate he pulled away!. I am not usre if you can help me at all Luke is presius to me as are all my dogs/animals and I would never dream of giving him away or abondoning him in a shelter but he is so disobediante and so anoying at times I wish I'd never got him but since I've had him two years and he is fairly fine with teh other dogs is ok with my neices and loves me very much he is deffnitly here to stay whic is why I so depreately need help. thank you for any information you can give. I am not palnning to inroll him in obedeance however please don't reccomend it I can not afford it firstly and secondlyhe hates strangers, he will sit and lay down for atreat for me however ans is good about that if I could only get him to come, i think he fears a punishment for comnig and and thats why he stays out I NEVER punished him for coming inside, never punished him for staying out for an hour by himself then coming in...NEVER but I do tell him a few sour words for being a pest and not coming in thou i do not yell at him because he *Is very sensitive.

Answer
Hi Tara,
Sounds like you have a typical, happy, stubborn jack there! I won't tell you to send him to obediance school, but you do have to re-train him to COME when you call.
He's older now so it's going to take some patience and time but don't give up! Can you afford to buy a "training leash" - they are LONG, up to 15 feet. If not, a regular leash is OK (but harder to train) - Even a long rope would work.  Send him out as usual but keep the leash on him.
When it's time for them to come in, you'll probably have to go out there but at least you will be able to get him now with the leash on. Have something absolutely delicious with you that he doesn't usually get (like a piece of roast beef or something), don't use an angry voice, but an "in charge" voice and tell him to COME and pull the leash towards you.. When he is finally at your feet, praise him like it's the best thing you ever saw in your life. You have to show him just how happy and excited you are and that he gets a delicious treat if he comes when called. Consistency is the key - you have to do it over and over and over until he gets it. Change the treat around once in a while so he doesn't know what it is. This will heighten his curiousity and make him want to come to you. Keep the leash or rope on him when he's out all the time. You are taking back the control. Don't ever RUN at him when training, they absolutely think you want to play!
OK, - when you are out for a walk with him and he pulls you; first of all you need a SHORT leash. The second he starts to pull - you stop dead in your tracks - just stop and stand there and don't continue walking until he is calm and stops pulling. Of course when you start walking again he will pull again, so stop again. Have some treats in the same hand as your leash and when he DOES walk next to you give him a treat and say "good walk" - It looks crazy and it's hard to do because you really want to walk but this is the best training method I know, and with patience it works! The stopping gets very boring to the dog and he will learn it's not worth it to pull and very worth it to stay at your side walking because you are treating him for being a good walker.
Good luck!! You can do it!! It's going to take some time so stick with it and don't give in. He has to know you are SERIOUS. Feel free to write again!
Take care,
Carol
