Marking territory

Question
My husband and I have a male Chihuahua mix and recently adopted a male Jack Russell.  The Jack Russell was in a home that had taken him in only because they watched a man drop the Jack Russell off in a grocery store parking lot.  The rescuers could not keep the Jack Russell and were on the verge of turning him over to domestic animal services.  My  husband of I, in a hurry to make sure the dog would not end up euthanized, offered to bring him into our home.  He is only occasionally aggressive toward our Chihuahua mix, usually over treats and has over time began to let the Chihuahua mix eat and drink out of his food and water bowls.  They have become great friends which I attribute to our Chihuahua mix being extremely submissive and just happy to have another dog in the house.  But now the Jack Russell has an issue with marking inside of our house.  Any suggestions?

Answer
Hello Heather

If he isn't neutered, have him done right away, which will help curb some of that marking drive. He definitely is feeling "at home" and this is how they mark their territory.
The only way to stop it is to catch him in the act, correct him loudly and take him outside. Over and over and over. If possible pick him up right in the act, and he will automatically stop... then get him outside to finish.  You'll have to get rid of the urine smell too - even though it doesn't smell to us after using cleaner, it does still smell to them, so you'll need to get some Urine Gone, or Gonzo or some other pet product that takes the smell away, or he will continue to mark the same place.
Best of luck
