Behaviour towards other dogs

Question
I hope you can help me as my dog is not a total Jack Russell she is a Jack Russell/Border Terrier cross.  She is 9 years old and we got her from an RSPCA rescue centre 1 year ago.  She is the perfect dog apart from 1 thing. She is fantastic with people and children, she's well behaved and loving.  The only problem is when we take her for a walk we have to avoid any other dogs as as soon as she spots one she becomes very vocal and aggressive - trying her hardest to get to them.  Is there anyway we could cure her of this at her age as it spoils our walks together. I would be grateful for any help you could offer. Thank you.

Answer
HI Carolann,
There is no easy fix for dog to dog aggression. You MUST establish control over the dog when you're out and do not let him see or feel you get nervous or tense. Keep the leash very short and close to you, keeping the dog right at your side. Don't give him any chance to pull you toward the other dog. Keep walking strong and with a purpose and be in complete control. Cesar Milan (famous professional dog trainer) has a technique that he uses that sounds a little harsh but does not hurt the dog. He will lift his leg and give the dog a little "kick" on his rear end to break the fierce concentration he has on the other dog. Do not kick hard, you are only reminding him to pay attention to the walk, NOT the dog. This technique has to be done WHILE walking with the dog, keeping the dog moving and held tightly against your side. Screaming and yelling does nothing but add stress to the situation. Be absolutely calm and assertive and in complete control, and keep moving.
Don't let him pull the leash away from you and don't stop walking. If you do this enough times, eventually you will teach your dog that you are in charge of the situation, not him!!! Stay focused, don't deviate from the technique, and send a clear message of who's boss. Don't give in or up! Best of luck!!
