puppy biting

Question
I've just adopted a 3 mth old JRT. I have a 3 year old chihuahua and a 10 yr Maltese. The new puppy chases them wanting to play. The Maltese just stands her ground and ignores the puppy but the chihuahua runs away yelping and that just excites the puppy more. Then if I try to intervene, she bites me. She'll bite at my face and my hands look awful. I've read other posts about taking JRT to training but no one in my small town does it before age 6 mths. So in the meantime, how do I discipline or stop the biting? If I push her away, she thinks I'm playing and bites more. I dont' want to hit her or hurt her in anyway. But I can't keep getting bit and the chihuahua is absolutely terrified. I really don't want to have to give away the puppy.

Answer
Hi Janice,

You're doing the right thing by pushing her away, but try using your voice at the same time too - "NO BITE"!!! With puppies it takes constant repetition for it to sink in. You could also get up and refuse to play. Reward her with play when she's not biting, get up and completely stop when she starts biting and repeat NO BITE!
Puppies that age are very actively teething and NEED to chew/bite.
Make sure she has plenty of rawhide to chew on, or crush ice in a facecloth, she'll love it. Repetition repetition repetition!!
Best of luck!
