New Jack Russell

Question
Hi!  My roommate and I are going to be getting a 1-year old Jack Russell this weekend.  She's in need of a home and we have lots of love and attention to spare.  My question is are the harnesses I'm seeing available with velcro closures and the like safe for using when walking?  Would just a collar and leash be a better option?  Actually I have about a million other questions, but the answer to that will tide me over for a while.  I appreciate any help you could give with this.

Answer
Hi Deanna,

Acutally the collar/leash thing is a matter of personal preference. There is no right or wrong way to walk the dog. You have to get a "feel" of what works for you and your dog. Some are definitely more comfortable than others. Sometimes the harnesses are irritating under the dogs arms, and regular collars can hurt if she is a "puller". (Train her not to pull!)  There is a "new" collar out called Martingale or Hound collars - which are wider at the throat and taper down toward the back with clasps that hook onto a leash. These collars are really comfortable, don't hurt the dog and give some good control when walking. They were first designed for Greyhounds but many many Jack Russell owners are using them because of the nature of the breed to want to pull and lead you (instead of the other way around). Of course good walking training is essential but I have found these collars to be the best I have used. Give each type a try and find what feels best for you and your new friend! Congratulations! You are entering a whole new world!!! A fun one it is. Good luck!
