Question
We have a JRT and have had him for about 9 months, over the weekend he went after and scratched/bit a year old little girl we are friends with.  We were camping and another little 4 year old girl was messing with him all day and night.  It was the first time he ever did that, he usually gets along with this year old girl.  It was a hard weekend for our JRT because we were camping and there were a lot of new people but we just can't have that.  We have thought about putting him down because we just can't have that, are there any other options???

Answer
Hello For heavens sake don't put your dog down because he doesnt like kids pulling his hair or stepping on his feet. Jack russell terriers Normaly Hate kids they are ok with older 10+ kids because they are smart enough to know Not to pull the dogs hair and pull its ears. He was minding his manner with the young child beforebut she must have hurt him by pulling his hair/ears or maybe she was being just too agressive with him...jacks are reknowed for being Domanate with people and other animal and other dogs....he also may have seen her as a threat towards you this past camping trip when she was around you so he went for her...Also you failed to mention if he is neutered neutering will lower domance levels and genrally make him a better pet. I can not say he wont do it again and kids shouldnt be allowed to Tease him anymore....if you can't kkeep him try find him another NON children bareing home...ie someone without kids and wont be having them in the next 15 or so years. I Can't advcate putting him down if it were my JRT i'd understand as my own dog will get grumpy and snappy with my neices (1 and 2 years old) and I know to tell the kids to back off when they are starting to pester him because he Would bite them its that simple jacks don't like teasing kids Period. Chancers are you yelled at him or smacked him for biting the littel child and he was therefore was tolerating the 4 year old because of fear of being yelled at or smacked again.
