Three JRs

Question
I recently purchased a 3 month old, female JR.  I already have two JR's, an 8 yr old female (Anna) and a 9 yr old male (Reggie).  Reggie is dominant, Anna is just a nice mannered JR.  The problem is with Reggie who has attacked the puppy (Tina) about 3 times.  He snarles and growls at her whenever she gets too close.  In our backyard, they are all fine.  I walk the puppy & him together and they're fine.  He of course will not play w/her.  Anna is good around her.  I'm hoping when she comes into heat, he'll be more interested in her and will be nice.  I do plan on getting her spayed.  He is neutered.  Will he accept her and be ok with her some day?  We've had her for 2 wks now. It's just when she gets near anything he owns he goes for her.  But when I'm there, he doesn't dare go after her.  I am always w/her in the yard ect. When I'm not, she is crated.  Please advise.  Jackie

Answer
Hi Jackie,

Reggie just thinks Tina is a pain in the butt. It's a pretty typical reaction for a newcomer in the house.
Reggie has to be corrected IMMEDIATELY after he growls or snarls Tina. Sounds like he knows his place if he doesn't do it while you're watching. Just be careful (like you are) and continue using the crate - and consistent correcting when he is being negative towards her.
They might never get along but they will definitely learn to tolerate eachother. Tina will know not to bug the grumpy guy. :)
Make sure you don't give anything of Reggie's to Tina, like an old bed or toy or dish etc... She should have everything new of her own. If she takes something of Reggies, take it away from her and give it to Reggie.  Spend some alone time with each of them, especially Reggie, and lavish him with lots of love so he knows he's not being replaced. Give him a treat when he's being good to Tina. Positive reinforecement works wonders.
It's going to take at least a few months for him to "get used to" her, so just keep up the good work and stay consistent in your corrections.  They should adjust fine.
If Reggie is extremely aggressive, and could really hurt or even kill her, you might have to reconsider keeping her. It doesn't happen often though. I wish you the very best of luck!
