DOG IN BASEMENT ALL DAY

Question
My Jack Russell has always walked down stairs with 3 legs and sometimes lifted her rear right leg when it is very cold outside.  We didn't think anything of it.  We've noticed that one of her nails on that paw is beginning to discolor.  She still runs about as usual, but is there reason for a trip to the vet?

We recently moved and leave her in the basement during the day.  After 6 years, it is like potty training all over again. Have troubles with urination (maybe separation?).  She knows she is doing wrong because she is usually shaking when we come home.

Help!

Thanks,  John

Answer
Hi John
I wouldn't worry about the nail - but keep an eye on it, if it gets bad looking then yes take her to the vet to be seen. One of my jack russell also lifts one paw up when she is on cold ground, it's just sensitivity.
The shaking I'm afraid to say is due to the ENORMOUS change she is going through in her life. Moving is traumatic to a dog and she should be handled with care. She is in a brand new environment and doesn't know the rules yet. You will definitely have to re-train her in the new environment - is it necessary to keep her alone in the basement all day? I think I'd be shaking too. She's afraid, she's nervous, she has no idea why everything has changed and you are missing for most of the day! Don't correct or scold with anger or you will make things worse. Some TLC and patience is in order for right now; she will eventually understand what is expected of her, but for now she is still in the very early stages of learning.
Take her out many many many times a day to get her used to doing her business outside in the new yard - hire someone to do it if you can't. Correcting her AFTER the fact is useless, she won't fully understand why you're yelling at her when all she wants to do is see and be with you after a long day in the basement. She is scared and she is confused, you have to start all over again and house train her with positive reinforcement.
Good luck to ALL of you.
