Question
Carol,
I have a couple questions if you dont mind.  Heres alittle backround.  I just got our JRT (Lucky) from a neglectful and non loving home.  He was always left on a leash till late at night when he was then put in a small crate inside the shed.  He is adjusting to our home and love I feel quite well.   questions/concerns:
1.  I currently have 2 cats and a crippled miniture pincher thats 12 years old.  He and the minpin are getting along ok learning each others boundaries.  My concern is with the cats.  He seems to dislike them alot.  Will I ever be able to get them to cohabitat?  I know not to ever leave them alone.  Could I leave him alone with the minpin?
Question:  I am in process of house breaking him.  He has had couple accidents... how long will this process take typically?   I have only owned him for 4 days. currently I take him out every 2hours and when he does his duty outside I praise him, when he does it inside I firmly state NO then immediately take him outside.  What should I do if I dont catch him in the "act"?
Those are my main questions... but I could go on and on...
Thank You for all your help
Tami

Answer
Hi Tami,
Congrats on your new dog, and thank you for rescuing him. No dog should have to be tethered and crated 24 hours a day, you are a good person to take him in.
He's still young and you can absolutely train him to live with the cats, the minipin and anyone else who comes into your house.
I wouldn't leave them alone right now since it's all so very new to him. Crate him when you go out and let the others live as they are accustomed. He has to learn that he is bottom man on the totem pole....that's hard for a Jack!
but very very important for him to learn.
You are taking him out every two hours, you are correcting him after he goes and most importantly you are correcting him when caught in the act! You're doing everything right!
Because of his past, it might take him longer to adjust and learn so don't be discouraged and keep up the good training. It's not unusual for it to take 6 months to a year to get them completely trained. Just keep up what your doing, and don't change training tactics. Consistency is the key!
When you are all together, let all the animals roam and do their own thing; when Lucky gets aggressive with ANY of them, you have to step in and do the correction IMMEDIATELY. I use the Cesar Milan method of firmly squeezing the back on the neck (like a mother dog would teach a puppy) and use a noise command such as "pssst!!" at the same time. You are breaking his concentration and changing his thought pattern and calling attention to yourself as the pack leader. Repeat repeat repeat over and over and over. The SECOND you see that aggression coming out of him, make the "psst" noise and direct him away from the cat. I wouldn't worry about Lucky hurting the cats, but  moreso the other way around. 9 times out of 10 the cat wins. They have 5 weapons to the dogs one. Sometimes it's the only way some dogs learn to stay away... is to get scratched - but just stay consistent and calm and assertive and you will all do just fine!! If you want to see this method in action try to check out The Dog Whisperer on the National Geographic Channel on Friday nights in the U.S.
Keep up the GREAT work!
