8 week old Jack Russell; biting and snapping

Question
Dear Carol

We bought home a Jack Russell Terrier called Frasier on Thursday 3rd July, we
got him 1 day shy of being 8 weeks old. Before collecting him we went to see
him every evening of that week for about 30 minutes so he could get used to
us.
He has been absolutely golden, he does his business outside and has had one
or two accidents, (although he cried the first time) he sleeps in his crate and
bed without protest , understands AH AH when he is touching something he
is not meant to, but we were wondering why he is biting so much.
We understand that he is teething and he is soothing his itching gums, and
we do not mind that and he is quickly distracted toward his own toys after a
stern OUCH. However when he is hyped up or has a toy in his possession he
snaps at our faces and hands, not in a nasty way he doesn't growl or show his
teeth, we just really want to nip this in the bud and we were wondering
whether this is a normal puppy behavior.
We have been reprimanding him by yelling OUCH taking away his toy and
ignoring him for 1 minute, before proceeding with play, if he does it again we
continue to do the same.
Does this snapping mean we have a bad dog? He came from very docile
parents and we trusted our breeder.
We would truly appreciate any information you can offer, this is our first dog
together as a couple and we really want to get this right.

Answer
Hi  Carlie,
It sounds like you have a wonderful puppy and you're doing everything the way you are supposed to. Don't worry about the biting, you're right he is teething and will be for the next few months. His baby teeth will fall out and the permanent ones will be coming in. Correct him for ANY biting he does to you or your hands or anywhere on your body or things you don't want bitten. DON'T play tug-of-war with him because it is a game of dominance and you will be giving him permission to try to be dominant over you. Teach him to "let go" and drop the toy. When puppies are little they play with eachother and bite eachother, it doesn't hurt because they have fur but when they play with us (skin!) it hurts! Continue with the "OUCH" OR "NO BITE"
and redirect him to an approved chew toy.
You do not have a bad dog at all - this is very normal and WILL go away once those teeth have come in.  Keep doing what you're doing, correct him for snapping/biting, refuse to play, and redirect him to a toy and he will learn what is acceptable and what is not. Consistency is the key and you sound like you're doing an excellent job. Keep up the great work.
Hint: ice cubes crushed in a facecloth is a great chew toy for teething puppies, he will love it! Not too much ice so it melts all over your floor, just enough that the facecloth will absorb. Tie it in a knot and your ready to go!
Good luck and congrats on the new little guy.
