sick after shots?

Question
Hello.  Today we went and got our 4 month old jack russell her second set of shots.  On the way home, she would not sit in anyone's lap but instead crawled to the back in her cage and voluntarily curled up in it (which is not her at all).  When we got home, she would not eat, move...anything.  She squeals when we pick her up and looks terrible.  We are thinking it's just a bad reaction to the shots (though her first set of shots went fine), but then I remembered that on Saturday, my aunt fed her a chicken wing; which she swallowed whole.  She choked on that for about 30 seconds, but hasn't seemed too bad from that.  We called the vet, and they said it was probably from the shots, but I'm still worried.  Could it be the bone?

Answer
Hi Mary,
I always tend to go for the "better safe than sorry" avenue.
I'd definitely be concerned about the chicken wing, especially if it was swallowed whole. One of the bones could have potentially punctured through her stomach or intestines or bowel, or it could be lodged in tightly somewhere. Truthfully, she could die from complications from either of these scenarios.  I would not take the chance and I'd bring her back to be immediately evaluated.
Have an x-ray done - better safe than sorry. You'd much rather pay for an x-ray than emergency surgery.
Like I said I alway err on the side of caution.

Vaccinations are tricky. If you got the pup from a reputable breeder, the first set of shots should have been done at 7 weeks of age and include the following:

7-8 weeks: DHPPC*-Distemper, Canine Infectious Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus, and Coronavirus

The 2nd set of shots is a booster of the above.

You should find out from the breeder exactly what she got for her first set of shots and then compare it to what she got today. There is a possibility that she is having an allergic reaction to one of the components of the vaccine,
especially if it was not included in the original vaccine that the breeder gave her.

OK, so back to the chicken bone. Go with your gut instincts. You know your dog better than anyone else. I've never had a puppy cringe in pain when you picked her up from vaccinations. It sounds very suspicious and nerve-wracking to me. You're smart to worry.  I hope she's OK. Best of luck.
