2 yr old JRTout of control w/guests

Question
Hi, my husband and I have a 2 1/2 yr old JRT, Bailey.  He's a great companion, fun to play with, etc.  But whenever we have company, he goes crazy.  He turbo's on the couches (running on them, jumping off them continually), and just wants attention from the guest.  He gets very hyper, then begins to yip (a high-pitched bark that he doesn't use regularly around us) to get the guest's attention; he jumps at their legs, etc.  After some time passes, (about 15-20 min) he seems to calm down a bit and will be occupied by chewing a bone.  Is there any way to get him to calm down a bit quicker?  Thank you in advance for your advice.

Answer
Hi Megan,

If you know you have company coming, get him OUT of the house and run his little butt off before they come. You can even put him on your own treadmill if you can't take him out.  You need to burn off that excess energy and anxiety.  He will probably still get excited when people come over but a good tiring dose of exercise will decrease it substantially!
You can try to train him to be quiet when the door bell rings too.  Bring someone over and practice practice practice.  Stand by his bed, let the bell ring, and you give him a noise and a hand signal to STAY. A "psst" and a firm squeeze (not painful!) to his neck.  Hold onto his collar. When he does STAY, reward him with a piece of cheese or something.
Have the guest come OVER TO HIM and say hello.
The trick is to try to get him to stay in his bed when the bell rings. It takes TIME and patience but it does work.
Over and over and over and over! You will desensitize him to the bell.  Dogs are great at observing their owners behaviors and I bet he can feel YOUR excitement and is just following suit!  Try to be calm and in control. Take the excitement away by bringing the guest over to him first.  If you are running and yelling at him trying to make him stop turbo'ing (love that word!) he'll only think you are playing too. "Stay calm and assertive".
Easier said than done, I know :)))
Good luck!
