Walking problems

Question
My son recently rescued a 2yr old female JRT who has already had two litters of pups.  He intends to have her spayed soon.  Our problem with her is when we walk her she goes crazy if she sees another dog or a jogger (she loves other walkers and children).  She starts this high pitched barking and whinning and terrible pulling on the leash.  Do you think she would benefit from group training?  What should we do to stop this behavior?

Answer
Hello Bea,

Yes it would be a good idea to have her spayed right away.
Group training and classes for dogs is always a good idea and can only benefit both dog and owner. She definitely needs some more DOG socialization and classes are a wonderful opportunity for this.
She also needs specific training to stop the barking/pulling when she sees other dogs.
It's hard to describe here on the internet but she has to be immediately corrected with a touch/noise command. Have you ever watched The Dog Whisperer on The National Geographic Channel ??
It's on Friday evenings and Cesar Milan the trainer teaches an amazing technique of how to stop the behavior with a simple commmand by breaking the focus the dog has on the other dogs. He touches the neck or hind quarters with his hand or foot, uses a noise command at the same time and redirects the dogs attention.
Stop and Shop and other retail stores sell tapes and books on Cesars dog training methods and I highly recommend them both.
Best of luck to all
