Husky/Labrador Mix Behavior

Question
Dear Faye-

My Husky/Lab (Neutered) Mix is now reaching 2 years old.  Last night a female pug that he has encountered several times a week for the last year approached him as usual.  He was flat on the ground as he usually does when a small dog walks to him.  Suddenly he snapped and growled- I was afraid he might bite her. (I scolded him severely and he acted like nothing had happened.) The owners of this pug have been trying to bred her lately so I don't know if she is in heat or pregant or what.  This is the second time this has happened with a female dog recently.  What's going on with him-  ordinarily he loves all dogs including the pug.

Answer
Dear Morgana,
Sometimes i guess dogs are just like people and at times it is difficult to guess what is on their minds.Perhaps the pug gave your boy some signal that you did not see,or interpret, and he was just answering her back in kind. Some bitches can behave a bit badly when they are coming into season.Maybe your boy was just reacting to her mixed signals. You will probably be none the wiser.Watch them closely next time to see if you can pick up any clues.I do not think that desexing him would cause this,as if anything it would only make him less aggressive rather than more.I tend to think it was something the pug did rather than your dog as your dog got down in the play posture when they first met,and i guess she just didn't want to play.Keep a careful eye on them nextime you meet and if it dosen't look good dont push it,your boy will work it out.
I hope i have been of some help to you.
Love Faye and Husky Crew.
