Question
We currently have a 4 year old female Siberian Husky as a family pet. We are considering adopting a 9 year old male Siberian Husky from a family member. How easy or difficult will this be, and if we do this what kind of things can we do to make this an easy transition?

Answer
Hi Corey and Lisa,

The first thing that you are going to want to do is introduce both the huskies.  If they seem to get a long, then you should not have a problem.  Male and female huskies both like to be the dominant gender in this breed.  Therefore, you might get some fighting, but usually it is a play fighting.

When I adopted my female husky, I already had a male husky.  They got along just great.  At first, they did fight a lot, but after awhile they were best friends.  Usually husky owners get another husky because this breed likes companionship.  My two huskies always played fought and gave a lot of attention to each other.  It was great, but at time, it gets hard to handle two huskies because they are so powerful.

Now for the first couple of weeks you should monitor them together to make sure everything is going smoothly with the new husky.  They might fight, which the reason is because the female husky has another dog in her territory and she is trying to show that she is dominated.  Now the male wants to be dominated gender, so he will fight back.  I would not recommend leaving them outside or home alone together, until you know they get along fine and there is no fighting.  If you have a crate, you might want to put the new husky in the crate when you are gone until you are comfortable with leaving them both together.  Also during this time, I would not give all the attention to the new husky because your female husky will get jealous and rebel.  Therefore, it might make it easier if you take her on walks or on outings just by herself for a little while, so she does not think she being replaced.

These are just some tips on what might happen and what you can do to help everything going smoothly.  If the two huskies get along just great, then you do not really have to worry about a thing.  If not, you can follow some of these tips to see if they will help.  I hope everything will go great for you and good luck with your decision on the new husky.  If you have any more questions, please ask.

Thank you,
Laura
