Golden retriever odd behavior

Question
I have a 11 month old golden. I think she has just started her first heat, after which we will spay her. She is acting fairly normally except for one very odd behavior. We have the couch covered in sheets, and when she jumps on it, or on anyone's bed, she starts this sort of obssesive, very fast paced biting with her front teeth. She will not stop until she is off the sheets, or comforter. She will even transfer this to our pants or the carpet. Is this related to being in season, or is she starting some annoying odd behavior? We do live where it is really cold, so it has been very hard to go on a long walk for exercise. Any ideas?

Answer
I tend to accept almost any behavior before, during and after a females heat cycle as due to it, and work at enduring them, controlling them as necessary, and hoping they will go away, rather than trying to train them away.  Mostly they demand attention, show more interest is sniffing around anywhere a male marked,  and can become very determined and creative about getting loose to find male companionship.  The vulva will swell and soon start a bloody discharge.  They become fertile in about a week later.  Just be ready for anything.  Once loose, there are far worse consequences than an accidental litter, infections, getting lost, getting killed in traffic, etc.

I am very negative about not spaying the females by 6 months, but do know there are some reliable reports to back your decision to wait until after her first heat.  I have gained my experience with females in heat through a dog guide program that wants to be able to select any of their puppies as breeding stock after they are a year old.  One of ours was.  All the rest are then spay/neutered.  I am not looking forward the Xanthe, a female Lab we have now, coming into heat.  She has been a difficult puppy right along.  Our of our last 4 puppies, 2 didn't come into heat before going away to school, and the other 2 were part of a different program that spay/neuters most of their puppies by 6 months.
