Hi. We have a very healthy and playful 5.5 month old golden retriever when my brother bought him 2 months ago. She had his regular shots and was eating regularly with good appetite. We feed him puppy dog food and rice meal mix regularly until he got sick 2 weeks ago. I noticed she had a fever and after assessment by the vet, recommended antibiotics and paracetamol to control her fever. Her fever was gone but she lost her appetite. She was again checked and was seen to have low red blood cells. We have been medicating her with vitamin E, pet tabs (pet vitamins, Essentiale (I don't know what the med exactly is for) and ferrous sulfate for her red blood cell. We also got her into chicken liver diet and been forced feeding her as she wont eat. Now, she seems well but is very picky with food that she eats and force her to eat blended (wet) dog food. Her skin rashes and hair improved being soft now unlike before which was too dry and flaky. She lost about 2-3 pounds and does not seem to eat even when she is hungry. She just lie in the porch and does not walk much unless we walk her out of the house. She normally stays outside the house but we once in a while let her stay in the house since my 88 year old grandma does not want much dog urine in the house. When inside the house, she wants to play and walks around but still picky about food - will bite a few and will not eat the rest given to her. How can we get her back to eat enthusiastically again and be herself again- playful and barking? Thank you and apologies for the long inquiry.
AnswerHi Jade and Pauline - Sound like your girl became anemic. Did she have fleas? That can cause her to get low red blood cells?
Let's make a few changes with this kid.
See if we can get her back to a fun loving Puppy.
If you have a local pet store buy some of the Merrick wet canned dog food / Stews for dogs/ They look good enough to eat for humans.
See if you can get that into her. Also, the Wellness people make a good canned food and dry dog food, too... ( puppy formula)
Ok, continue with the Iron, ferrous sulfate ( as per your vet) and the Essentiale?, as for the Pet Tabs - Junk and mostly sugar.

Also, you can see if she will eat some low fat cottage cheese - most dogs like it - give her 1/2 cup per day.
Another thing you can try is PURE canned pumpkin - no sugar added / this is good fiber and calories / ( 1/4 a cup per day )
