A good time to spay?

Question
Hi, I have a 7 mo. old Golden Retriever pup. She has not gone through her first cycle yet. Is it better to have her spayed now, or wait until after her first heat? I've read some pros & cons on this subject. I have no intentions of ever breeding her. Thank you in advance :)

Answer
I would do it just as soon as you can.  It is possible there is a slight medical advantage to waiting, but it is commonly done before their first cycle. That works, and works very well.  Have you ever gone through a heat cycle with one?  I have, and it is a big hassle.  The mess, the behavior problem, the chances of getting loose, a $20 sanitary garment used once, etc.  Plan creative, strenuous efforts to get loose you won't believe.  The males hanging around will do their part to to get to her.  There are worse consequences to her getting loose than an unwanted litter.  If mated, she could get a fatal infection.  She could dash out in front of a car.  Simplify your life, call the vet today.
