Question
Our golden retriever puppy is 12 weeks old. We brought him home on Sunday 14 February. He ate his bowl of dry food, uses paper to poop and wee and sleeps at night in his bed. He loves playing with us and toys and runs in garden but the second day hardly ate anything and by day three his stools were loose (I presume with not eating much)so I got him wet puppy food as he seemed hungry and sits in kitchen when we are cooking and he quickly ate the food but the following morning wasn't interested took a few bites. Do you think he is just settling in? I am only worried because he is already 'one of us' sitting with the kids and playing etc vet says temp ok he is a little thin, yet big in size? Pease help

Answer
I don't like the sound of that.  It may be just settling in, but could take a turn for the worse over the weekend.  I would go back to the dry food and get a stool sample to the vet.  Chubby puppies are cute, but lean ones are healthier.   You should be feeding a puppy chow now. Switching to an adult chow for the larger breeds at 4 months, slows growth and helps develop sturdier joints.

Your dog definitely should be narrower at the waist than the hips and chest. You should be able to easily feel the ribs, but not see them. Each dog is different. Standard recommendations are a good place to start, but each dog must have its food and exercise adjusted to its individual needs.
