my 8 yr golden doesnt like my westie puppy

Question
ok. so I bought a new puppy just 3 days ago. I already owned a Golden Retriever who had always been the center of attention. We introduced them at home. The Westie puppy is very charming but also sees the Golden Retriever as a chance for playing, but my Golden doesn't respond the same way. When the Westie runs towards my Golden, my Golden will growl (never with his teeth showing) and move backwards, sometimes, the Golden also barks at the puppy. I have seen some improvement from the first day to today, like for example, the Golden retriever (three days ago) would be so scared of the puppy he wouldn't even walk close to it. Now, the Golden is walking closer and allowing some proximity. One thing i do not understand is why, when the westie is alone walking and exploring, the Golden will automatically chase him (never touching, just until he gets to a certain distance) and start barking at growling at the westie, I don't know if the Golden is taking care of the Westie, or simply doesn't trust him. Still my Golden has never bit the Westie and whenever the Westie is close to the Golden (and the Golden wants to escape) the Golden is very careful not to harm the puppy. I cannot leave them alone because i am scared the Golden could bite the stubborn puppy, but a good aspect about the puppy is that today he was actually showing some respect to the Golden, whenever the Golden growled, the Westie would just lay on the grass cautiously, but still it needs to respect the Golden more. So I need your help to please give me some tips, I am still paying lots of attention, individually and with the westie, to my Golden, and my Golden doesn't seem sad, or jealous, Golden actually permits the Westie to drink from his water but gets annoyed when westie steals his toys. So please help me a bit here, I think i am doing a good job, but i am not so sure, because really, i was expecting more of the Golden (who has been with other dogs, but bigger dogs, and who isn't really SUPER socialized). In two days i am going to a beach house, but i am thinking about taking the puppy with us (cant take Golden) because i am scared that they can fight!
PLEASE ANSWER!!!!

Answer
Once past 3 years old, many dogs don't want anything to do with puppies, their sharp little teeth, and their biting games.  You need to teach the puppy to leave the older dog alone.  As soon as the puppy starts to focus on the older dog, give it a sharp ''Ah, ah, ah!'' and offer it a chew toy.

You may need to crate the puppy when leaving them alone.
