walking a puppy

Question
Hi, wonder if anyone can help? I have a 12 week Golden Retriever. Been walking him a few weeks. He was fine but he's started not wanting to walk at all with me.He keeps turning to go home. He will run from end of street back to house if allowed. Treats/toys work a little but not much. Most annoying thing is that he'll walk for my O/H easily and that drives me made as the pup is with me all day and follows me around. Any ideas as am getting really upset.

Answer
That is strange.  You might try obedience training.  You should be doing it anyway.  It could establish you as a trusted leader.  Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog.  Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones.  You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat. Start at http://www.dogsbestfriend.com/

He is much too young to go to a class.  At his age, you will need to keep sessions short, only a few repetitions of one command.  A few minutes here and there, and in a month, people will be amazed at how well he does.
