QUESTION: The vet says our baby is in the 2nd of the three weeks of heat. How often will she go into heat if we don't spade her? Sincere thanks.

ANSWER: For most females it is about every 6 months.  Be very careful with her this week.  don't put anything past her when it comes to getting lose and going off seeking a male.  Don't bathe her until she is all done and the swelling goes down.  

I am sure after going through the mess, hassle, risks, etc. once, you don't want to do it every 6 months.  The vet likely will want to wait a month or 2.  Just don't put off until May, or you will be going through it all over.

In its swelled condition, the vulva may let water in causing an infection.  I guess you could sponge her off.  I know mine are always ready for a bath when the time comes.  It is about the only time I bathe dogs.

The discharge usually is finished by the end of the third week.  The swelling lasts several more weeks.  Then a false pregnancy can go on and on.
