Golden retriever irritated eyes; allergies in canine;

Question
We are currently visiting my parents and my golden is Having problems with his eyes. We are from the south and they live up north and when he's  inside his eyes will start to get irritated and they will close for about 5-10 min. When we let him out in the snow it seems to clear up faster. There are cats in the house which the golden has never been around before. Is he allergic to cats if so what can we do to help him through the short trip here.
