Question
we adopted a 2 1/2 yo female golden.... her original owners were getting rid of her d/t behavior issues....mostly her energy level from what i can tell, cause she is a very good dog!!!  i have never had a golden, we have a 5 y/o yel.lab/golden male (big sweetie, not nearly as much energy!)  i have never had a dog "shake" their toys as violently as this dog does!!!!  can she hurt herself?  i havent given her anything that she can knock herself out with, but i am fearful of her neck, spine & muscles!  she killed a ground hog the first week we had her & it was by shaking it to death!!!  also, are they noted to "snore & grunt".  when she is awake & relaxed, while you are petting her, she makes this "snoring" noise....its really weird..she doesnt seem to have any difficulty breathing....lastly, she loves to be active & play, but is there a point when there is "too much of a good thing", cause she dosent seems to quit!!!  aleast not on her own.... i dont mind playing, walking, or swimming, but i dont want her to be harmed because of it....she does everything over the top, to the extreme.....what suggestions do you have for toys, books on the adult golden, training a gun dog?
thanks,
shannon

Answer
I never heard of a dog hurting itself with a toy too big to swallow.  The pet stores are full of toys that many dogs will quickly chew up into
pieces they could choke on or cause intestinal blockages.  If you are not
there to watch, stick to sturdy stuff such as Nylabones and Kongs.  Keep a
close eye on chew toys and quickly discard anything that is coming apart in
pieces.  Rawhide is especially bad because it swells after being swallowed.
These problems are the worst with, but not limited to, large, aggressive
chewers such as Labs.

Ropes from the pets' store quickly turn to hazardous shreds.   Ones I made
lasted much better.   Go to a hardware or home center that sells rope by the
foot.  Buy 2' of 3/4" poly rope.   Melt the ends, and tie  knots in it.   Get
them as tight as possible, put it in a vise and pound it with a hammer.  Watch
carefully, and be ready to discard when it comes apart.

I knew we have been out in the sun too long last summer when my old Lab was grunting with pleasure when we went down to the creek for her swim.  They sometimes do sound like a pig in a wollow.

I know little of gun dogs.  Your best be is to find a forum dedicated to them.  General Q&A sites like this usually don't have enough good people for more specialized questions.  Try doing a search on something like phpbb + Golden + gun or vbulletin + ...  That will return forums using the popular software with references to Goldens and guns.
