Hello, I am wanting to get Jack russle terrier pup this coming spring but am wondering would my dog get alone with this pup? she loves my friends(with whom I'm living) golden retriver/yellow lab cross adn adores my mothers two bichon/shiztuz crosses(they come to visit offen), I am not too sure how the goldenX acts around my mothers dogs so I will have to do a supervised test to see if she'd try attack a tiny pup, the goldenX is spayed, my mothers two dogs are spayed as well... my lab isnt yet spayed, she is 11 months and I'm going to have her done two months after getting the pup. My questions are.........

When I bring the pup home should I keep him seprate from the others for the first few hours to alow him to get to know his habitat and me better before being stressed more by the two large dogs?

Should the pup be male or female? everyone says it'd be better to get a male as one of the females may decid to challange each other some day and the rusults wouldn't be very pretty... what do you think?

I have heard that jack russles can be aggressive towards other dogs...... wouldn't they get along if they grew up together?

My friend also has two cats.... how would the pupy get alone with them?

The pupy will be allowed to go ni the living room, kitchen, bedroom & dinning area how do I puppy proof these areas?

I have never owned a small breed puppy with a larger dog..... let allow two...... how is this going to work? I mean am I always gonig to ahev to be following the pup around to be sure one of the larger dogs doesnt step on it or nip at it?

Is it safe to allow the other dogs to play with it?

Thank you for your help in advance

Thank you for your help, I have a plastic kennle which is a little less then two feet long, about 18 inches high and is about 14 inches wide.... is this too big for a russle pup? also I'm going to swich my la two nutro natural choise/nutro max for large breeds.... is this a good food? for that price is it much better then purina dog chow? the pup will be going on nutro ultra/nutro natural choice or nutro max puppy..... is any one better then the other?

Also I am intersted in training my lab to walk on a leach as she pulls so hard she nearly breaks her collar lol, I wolud like to use a noraml harrness for training her to walk on a leash as it gives more control of the dog without having to put a head halter on it...... would this stop her pulling so much?

Also I probly wont be taking the ppuy out on walsk much until it has at lest two puppy vaccines, I would like to have it wear a collar with its id tags on but for walking would like to use a normal harrness.... would this be ok?

I have a slight deliema....... my lab sleeps at the foot of my bed and has ever since she was a three month old malnurised puppy(which is when I got her), when I bring the puppy home, and he's sitting in that crate crying beside my bed as he sees my lab on my bed...... wouldn't he think he should be up there too? I wouldn't mind the pup in the bed but my only conceren is that he will jump to go potty and hurt his self...... would he jump off of something thats about two and a half feet off the floor? or would he just wake me with crys when hes got to go potty?

Either way if I can get him to stay quite in the crate or pervent him from jumping off my bed...... how offen will he need to go potty? I am more then willing to take him out when he needs to go but am not sure how offen he'd need to go at night, I take water away an hour before betime to pevent my lab from wanting to go potty earlier.

Thank you for your help in advance.

Answer
The plastic kennel you have would work with the puppy.  I have put little Lab puppies in a 36'' crate without any problems.  Some people do have problems.  You might block off part of the crate at first.

Almost all of the commercial dog chows provide good nutrition.  Because the Nutro is more concentrated, you would feed less than the Purina.  I think many Labs would prefer the cheaper stuff they get more of.  I don't think most of them ever taste their food the way they eat.  if you feel better about the Neutro, go ahead with it.

If you really want to stop the dog from pulling, use the head collar.  The harness will only make it easier for the dog to pull.  I see no problem with using the harness on the little puppy.

On of the privileges of top dogs is getting the best sleeping spots.  Dogs can easily adjust to the people and older dogs being allowed on the bed and not the younger ones.

He should adjust to being in the crate next to the bed.  For the first few weeks, you may need to get up once in the middle of night to take him out.  When loose and active, they need to go out at least every hour, if not more.
