Where should puppy sleep?

Question
Hi,

One week ago we got a golden retriever female puppy. She is just over 2 1/2 months old. Since we got her she has slept next to our bed. This however has resulted in us (me in particular) not being able to sleep much at night. Not only do I get up a couple of times to take her to the garden to go potty, but I hear every movement she makes and worry about "accidents" (she has not had any at night).

We would like to change the place where she sleeps. Can she sleep outdoors (it is hot here year-round) or in the kitchen? What is recommendable?

I need my sleep!

Answer
I would definitely recommend against having the dog sleep outside, regardless of the weather.  Goldens are "people" dogs, even moreso than other breeds.  They need to be around their family or will develop other behaviors like digging, barking, escaping, etc.

I suggest you purchase a dog crate.  Any dog can learn to accept a crate, if introduced to it properly, but puppies are even easier.  Crate training also facilitates housebreaking, working with the dog's natural instinct to keep its "den" clean.

I'm including a bunch of puppy-related information, including crate training and housebreaking.
