Question
HI!
I have a akc golden retriever and i'm thinking abt studding him out(because he his such a good boy very mello, and very intellegent) right now he is 14 months old. My question is: Is it true that they have to be 2 years old and have their eyes and hips checked before studding him? Also is there any other tests that the vet does before I can stud him out? Thank you!

Answer
Nobody knows everything.  This is an area I have very little experience or training.  It is common to give a dog time to prove itself before breeding.  We would be better off if nobody bred the larger breeds without the OFA certification of their hips.  Eye problems are common and easily screened too.  Goldens frequently develop allergies too, a little more time will tell.

You say he is intelligent.  Have you competed in obedience or agility with him?  A few good showings could increase his value as a stud.  You could do field trials with him too.

www.akc.org has a wealth of information on common problems of the Goldens, and general breeding.  Likely much better advice than anyone here.
