covers for extension cords

Question
Hi - we have 2 8 month old goldens - they are great!  However, they are definitely in their chewing stage right now.  We have an extension cord we are wanting to use to display christmas lights outside (they are outside dogs) but know they will chew it - is there anything we can put on the cord to keep them from chewing through it?  We have a heated water bowl that has some kind of steel coil around it but don't know if you can just buy the coil to put over an extension cord.

Thanks!

Answer
You are quite right to be concerned about them chewing the cord.  Outside lights should be on a GFIC, which would protect the dogs, but not the cord.  I am unfamiliar with the steel coil on the heated water dish, but it sounds like a good idea.  I have never seen the steel coils for sale.  I am not sure what would be the best thing.  I replaced the cord of my computer surge protector with BX cable.  BX cable is flexible, spiral wound steel meant to go inside walls.  You can buy it anywhere electrical supplies are sold with or without wires inside it.  You could cut one end off the cord, slip the BX over it, and put a new end on it.  You could also buy BX with wires in it and add ends.  I used a heavy duty plug covered with metal on my surge protector.  I am not sure BX is rated for exterior use.  There may be plastic covered metal that is.  That could get expensive.

This is more of an electrical problem than a dog problem.  Some of the people here in the electrical area may be more familiar with what is available than I am.  They may not understand why you need an armored extension cord.  Even some that fancy themselves dog experts don't understand that some dogs will chew electrical cords.  I had to replace the plastic flex to my A/C condenser unit with rigid steel conduit.
