Question
My fiance and I are thinking of getting a golden for our 2nd dog. I've read that there very good with children but how hyper are they while there young? we have a collie and we want a dog who can keep up to her but be great with kids.

Answer
All puppies are highly active.  Just how active largely depends on the breeding.  Have you read Marley and Me?  How can Labs dominate as service dogs?  Because many of them are much quieter.  The right Golden would be Great with kids.  Depending on how young your kids are, you might consider adopting and older Golden.  About the time her son turned 2, Our daughter had a 4 year old Lab return to their care.  Great fit.

One of the best sources for dogs with a predictable personality is the rescue dogs. These are dogs that lost their home, but were taken into a foster home to be retrained as necessary and placed in the right home for them. You may find a rescue near you starting at http://www.akc.org/breeds/rescue.cfm The rescues charge a fee to help cover their expenses, but is much less than the price of a puppy plus all its medical expenses the first year.
