Question
Is there a cure for a 1 year aggressive Golden.
Loves adults hates kids.  He has been raised around a (2) children 18 and 14.  But he hates younger children.

My husband and I are besides ourselves on this one. We don't know what to do.  He is neutred.

Maybe you can help.

Thank you
Missy

Answer
Thank you for the detail on neutering.  It helps with many behavior problems, but is no cure all.  Dogs that aren't exposed to little kids before they are 12 weeks old, may never be comfortable around them.  Small children tend to be loud, shrill, fast moving, and clumsy, which dogs hate.

It may take quite a bit of work now.  The natural good nature of the goldens should help.  Of course, some dogs do not appear to have read their breed descriptions.  Try preparing the children ahead of time with treats.  If the dog is not getting a lot of treats, they can be as simple as a piece of his kibble.  When one of my Lab puppies was shying away from little kids, I carried a 35 mm film canister full of kibble in public.  He and his one sister seemed to go through a fear stage at 4 months that included little kids.  They both pulled out of it fairly quickly.  Also try to train the children to keep their hands away from the dog's head.  Dogs like a butt rub much better than a pat on the head.
