Question
We have a 7 month old AKC golden.  she is a wonderful dog, however she REFUSES to be housebroken.  We have tried everything, including gating, crating, and leaving her on a leash attached to me in order to be able to catch her in the act...but she literally refuses.  we can take her outside for over an hour, walk her around, and she will not go, until after we bring her in and she will go almost immediately.  she knows she does wrong, because all we have to say is her name, and she will immediately stop.  I am at a loss as to what to do.  i am at my wits end.  we have had her since she was 8 wks old, and never had 1 day where she was consistant.  please help, or my next step is a dog house, and i don't want to do that, but i can't keep having my carpets cleaned.

Answer
This is not a common problem.  I would try a couple of things.  If you don't have a fenced area, try tethering her outside and go away. She may not be comfortable going in front of you.  Do not confuse this with tying a dog to a dog house and leaving it.  Maybe go inside where you can secretly watch her, and bring her inside as soon as she goes.  You can pick up a sturdy plastic cable with a snap on each end for about $20.  I have a fenced yard now, but used them for years, and still occasionally put a dog out front on one.

The other thing is to choose a time when you have enough time to outlast her.  Stay out there and keep her moving.  If you can get to her before she wakes up in the morning, it might be good.  Once you outlast her, and she goes outside, praise her, pet her, carry on like she is the best dog in the world, maybe a treat.  Perhaps taking her on a tour of the mailboxes and fire hydrants would help.  The females like to check out the boys and leave their own messages.  It seems the older they get, the worse, even spayed ones.

Also try paved areas or gravel.  She may have been raised in a concrete basement or outside run and learned to use pavement.  Remember, if she finally goes, make sure she knows how happy you are about it, praise, praise, praise.
