Question
Hi-  My golden retriever, Zeke, is 10 yrs old and has terrible bad breath. What home rememdies can I do for him? Can I brush his teeth?  It s so bad that no one in the house wants to kiss him anymore.  Any advice you can offer will be greatly appreciated.  thanks

Answer
Likely you need to start with having a vet clean his teeth.  The vet can also check for other problems.

Next what are you feeding him?  If it is a canned food, change to a dry kibble. I will make no recommendation of a brand.  There is little hard data to suggest one over another.  Most dogs will thrive on most dry chows.  If you have trouble getting him to eat dry kibble, post back.

And yes you can and should brush his teeth.  Look for doggy tooth brushes and paste at the pet store or online.  Our toothpaste isn't good for dogs.

A dry kibble and brushing his teeth should slowly improve his breath.  The cleaning at the vet will jump start it.  the vet will clear up any infection contributing to the problem.
