Question
Hello,
I recently puchased an AKC GR pup, expecting his temperament to be as his breed's standards say. He's friendly, but EXTREMELY lazy, this could be because he's young, and I'm a new GR puppy owner. He doesn't show interest in toys or praise;only food and sleep. He is 3 and half months old. I thought these were supposed to be active, "retrieving" dogs..? Is it because he's young and growing rapidly or is he just a lazy stubborn dog? He also is very difficult when trying to train on a leash. He won't budge and will simply lay down, all fours spread out dragging along, so I have to pick him up and carry him. I don't understand. I researched they're extremely smart and learn fast. Why won't mine cooperate?

Answer
I agree with you, to some extent.  I believe for his age that he should be more active than what you describe.  Puppies do sleep a lot, but when they are awake, they are usually quite inquisitive and active.  What you're describing sounds a little excessive.  However, I don't think he should be labeled as stubborn or lazy.  I would be more concerned that there might be a medical reason for his behavior.  Animals don't generally choose to lay around unless they're not feeling well, are old, or have nothing to interest them.  It sounds like you are giving him ample opportunities for activity.

I would contact the dog's breeder and discuss this behavior with that person, and I would also ask your vet if there are any tests or blood work that can be done to try to diagnose what is going on.
