spaying before first heat vs. waiting

Question
I know you said no medical problems and I'm not sure this qualifies.  We have a 5 mo. old golden retriever female who has an inverted vulva.  From what I've read, it's possible that the swelling that occurs during the heat cycle might possibly break the adhesions that are causing the involution.  I would rather do that than have surgery to correct it.  But on the other hand, most sources recommend spaying before the first heat cycle to help prevent cancer, etc.

What's your opinion?

Thanks!

Answer
I would go ahead and have her spayed at 6 months.  If you aren't prepared for it, having a female go through her heat cycle is a big hassle.  You might even save some money by having the vet take care of the vulva at the same time.

After a string of easy puppies, we are struggling with a 5 month old female Yellow Lab that is the biggest challenge we have had for years.  I found myself thinking last night if she is like this now, what is she going to be like when she comes in heat?  Expect extreme behavior problems, mostly incredible attempts to get loose and go find a male.  We have gone through that 9 times.  While you can control the mess by purchasing a doggy sanitary garment, you still have the smell and behavior problems plus the risks of accidental breeding and getting loose.  Maybe I weigh the latter more because one of our puppies did get loose and got killed on the road.  There is also the risk infections and injuries from accidental breedings, perhaps more so with the inverted vulva.

I am not sure what you mean by the chance that a heat cycle might correct the inverted vulva.  That also means it might not.  So you could go through all the risks and hassles of the heat cycle and still pay to have it corrected.  I say, get her spayed when the vet says to.
