QuestionHi! I have an 11 month old female golden retriever. She has been a great dog. I take her to doggie day care, dog parks and she has been to 3 courses of training. Shes great and we wanted to get another golden for her to play with since she enjoys the company of another dog. I ended up getting a 9 week old female golden puppy. Was this a bad idea to have 2 females. The older one is already spayed. I do not want any fights to break out as they get older. So far they play, sleep and even eat together. I am just worried!!
Thanks
Heather
AnswerSome times there are a couple of dogs that even the best people can't make get along. The most usually combination is 2 females. I would have advised getting a male instead.
In many cases, 2 females get along fine. The problems come when both of the dogs have a high dominance drive. Even then, if the owner is playing the proper role of top dog, the dogs are competing for second place, a much lessor prize. You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat. Start at http://www.dogsbestfriend.com/
My friends have a older Lab, her daughter, and a female out of the daughter's last litter. They also have a female Golden about 6 years old. It and now the older Lab are spayed. They also have had a young, intact female Shepherd or Golden at times. Completing the pack is a neutered Golden. These are all strong willed dogs, but they all get along fine, because my friends do a very good job of dominating all the dogs.
