Question
Our 1 year old golden has recently been attacking our 7 year old german shepherd. he has brought the blood several times.  He attacks the other dog as if he is trying to kill him.  It is not a good situation. they cannot be kept together at all what can I do I don't want to get rid of him, but it may come to this soon

Answer
It is quite common for a dog as it matures to challenge older dogs for pack rank.  While females tend to be worse than males, 2 dominate males can be a big problem too.  If they are not both neutered, do so now.  It may or may not solve the problem alone, but is an essential step.  The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts.  Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog.  Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones.  You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat.
