Question
I would like to re-home a golden retriever that is currently in the local pound, she is 5 months old and was surrendered today, her owner said that she was told that the pup was a pure bread but has still not received the relevant documentation and she wasn't getting along with her cocker spaniel. I have an 18month old female golden retriever and I would like to know if I would be able to mix these two dogs?

Answer
That is hard to say.  If both the Cocker and Golden had strong dominance drives, you could have the same problem if the Golden you have also has a strong drive.  If the Cocker was too old to be interested in a puppy's rough play, then yours maybe happy to have her around.  Spaying them both and obedience training them will help make it work.

The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts. Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog. Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones. You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat.
