golden retriever neutering

Question
I have a five month old male golden retriever and am trying to decide at what age to have him neutered.  I have heard that neutering early can result in a more "female" looking golden.  I like the big square/boxy looking head and was wondering if this look is purely a genetic thing or if it is partly a result of neutering later.

Answer
I think one of the reasons Lab and Golden pups are so cute is they all have big, boxy heads.  Unfortunately, many, especially the females, end up with smaller, pointier faces as an adult.  Let me assure you this mostly happens by the time they are 5 months old.  I have to admit most of the dogs I see are not neutered until after they a year old.  However, at a year, they still look much like they did at 5 months, just slightly larger.  The chests do broaden out after a year old although spay/neutered.  So I would go along with when your vet feels is the best time to neuter.

I would also switch him to an adult chow now, and only enough of it to maintain a lean body.  Both will slow growth and give him more time to develop sturdy joints.  His size and head structure are genetically determined.  Feeding programs and neutering shouldn't have much affect.  Here is a link to an illustrated guide to maintaining ideal body condition,
