Having Buddy spayed(sp?)

Question
Hi Katie,
Thank you for your time; hope that you are well today.
My vet is recommending that I have Buddy spayed. Forgive me...is that the correct term for him? He is a two year old Golden mix.(Buddy is a found dog; I don't know his prior history) The vet says that having this procedure done will reduce his chances of cancer, and other bad things. Is this true? Buddy is an absolutely wonderful dog; happy, active, and just a perfect companion.
I have heard that this procedure can sometimes change the dogs' personality and traits. Are these statements accurate? Of course, my top priority is his health and happiness. Please advise at your convenience. Thank you for your help! Ian

Answer
There are so many reasons to have a male neutered. (Female spayed).  Many of them excellent reasons.  It will never change his personality and his traits are already in him, they don't change, no matter what you do.  The only thing it may do is he will gain a little weight, but that can be controlled with exercise and diet.  It will reduce risk for many diseases.  Unless you plan on breeding him, which isn't advisable being that he is a stray and you don't know his heritage nor is he full blooded, neutering his is an excellent idea.  He will actually probably be a more loyal dog. Go ahead, do it.  It doesn't hurt and only takes an afternoon.  He will need some time to rest, but then he'll be back up and running around within a day or so.  good luck
