Golden Retriever Cancer

Question
I read your 2005 answer re cancer in Golden Retrievers. You said that there are still lines available which are relatively cancer free and offered to help the person find a breeder. I have lost 4 of my 5 Goldens prematurely to cancer, the most recent being a 9 1/2 year old to hemangiosarcoma. In doing some research I found that 1 of 8 Goldens will likely die of lymphoma and 1 of 5 will die of hemangiosarcoma. Also, my guy who died of hemangiosarcoma had also lost an eye due to pigmentary uveitis aka Golden Retriever syndrome - a new disease which has burst onto the scene in the last few years. I have bought Goldens from reputable breeders from Oregon to Texas to Pennsylvania. I want another Golden badly and would buy one if I could really find a healthy line. Thanks for your help.

Answer
I am sorry if I suggested I could help select a good line, relatively free of cancer.  Yes, such lines exist, but I can't point you to them.  One of the big problems is that some show breeders won't see a dog that dies from cancer at 9 years old as a serious problem.  Perhaps you need to look at some of the working lines.  A dog bred for hunting might be best.  Field trial champions may be no healthier than show champions, and be too high energy to be good pets.  Find somebody whose hunting dog lives in the house.

For those of us that truly dogs, losing them at any age hurts.  My Lab just turned 15, and I am not sure she is enjoying life enough to ask her to continue enduring the pain of her arthritis and jaw cancer.  She was dog guide stock, some of the best dog there are.  They are tough to come by.
