Diarrhea on and off

Question
I have a 6mo old Golden. When she was 4 months oldshe got hook worms. She was treated and was fine for a while. She started with diarrhea again. The vet put her on Hills I/D for about a week and All different meds. That seemed to work. When we put her back on her regular diet 3 days later she started again. The vet changed her food to Science Diet Large breed puppy food. She was on Natural Choice (Nutro) prior. She started that about 2 weeks ago while she was on her meds so nothing really changed except she wasn't on her Meds. When she gets diarrhea she always mess's in her crate. My husband and I are up several time times a night cleaning her crate and washing her off. I don't know what to do. Should I try a natural  fomula? Or change vets? We have had this vet for 15 years. Cassie has energy and loves to play with the kids. But something is not right.

Answer
Has your vet cautioned you to make the diet changes gradually over about a week?  Sudden changes in diet can cause loose bowels.  If he didn't, that is his third strike.  He has not solved the problem.  Switching a 6 month old to even large breed puppy chow rather than an adult chow, shows he is behind on dog nutrition.  An early switch to adult chow in the larger breeds slows growth and allows stronger joints to develop.  This is very important in Goldens with their all too common hip problems.

If she is still having diarrhea, put her on a recovery diet.

Bland recovery diet for dogs.

3 parts cooked rice, one part boiled hamburger or chicken, or cottage cheese. I think you can substitute boiled potatoes for the rice.  Once in an emergency, we bought a plain baked potato from Wendy's.  We were facing a 6 hour drive home with 2 Labs that had nothing to eat all day.  That is an emergency.

This is meant for short time settling a dog's digestive tract.  It is not the complete and balanced diet they need long term.

I am not a believer in natural diets.  I go mostly by what a large dog guide school tells me.  They have an incredible data base on dogs.  They breed 300 puppies a year, and give away any with joint or other health problems.  They have us switch their Goldens and other breeds to Pro Plan adult chicken and rice at 4 months.  Once her digestive tract settles down, I would choose a middle range adult chow.  Other schools feed Iam's or Eukanuba.

In the mean time, a rack in the crate would reduce the mess of the diarrhea.  Skip the bedding.  At first it gets wet, and later it can be chewed into choking hazards.  A wire rack in the bottom will help keep the puppy up out of
accidents at first. They are available with the crates, but a piece of closely
spaced wire closet shelving from a home supply place is cheaper.  with a golden, you may need to block it up 2-3'' off the floor.

You may need to chill a little.  I had Aster in for a shot today.  I was talking to my vet today about my friend and her dogs.  I suggested he could solve the dog's problem by prescribing Valium for the owner.
