QuestionI guess I know more about human A&P/health than the dogs that live under my nose---
The female is most likely in her first heat- at any rate (they)have never acted like this before [constant licking and smelling...etc] I checked under her tail yesterday and she had some serosanuineous discharge, and swelling----at any rate I had separated the two but found them together trying to connect after the kids let them loose...who knows if they did it earlier? Well any way I was wondering if the dog is like the human in hormones--- will a urine pregnancy test work? Or do I have to worry? If they did it already would they still be interested?---I really wanted to wait till she was older---she is a year this month.---also for future reference is there a heat cycle I can kind of expect form a golden?
Please respond- worried potential puppy owner.
AnswerUsually it is a week or more after the first discharge before a female will accept a male and conceive. Even after a female has been bred, she will continue to accept any male she gets a chance to. This can even lead to a litter with multiple fathers. So get serious about keeping her away from him and any other male. Expect strenous, creative attempts to get to a male. Even neutered males may mate with a female in season. No puppies, but perhaps a life threatening infection.
Responsible breeding consists of much more than purchasing a dog of each sex. A good place to start is www.akc.org. Do you have OFA X-rays for him? Perhaps too early for her.
