gun shy lab

I have been going duck hunting a lot lately but me and my buddies can't find a good dog to use because my lab is gun shy. My dog is one of the most obedient labs and loves to retrieve but i don't know if it's too late. My lab is 5 years old and starts shaking violently and gets really scared at the sound of a gun or firework. If you could help me with some methods or let me know if it's too late, that would be much appreciated. Thanks

Changing a 5 year old could be tough and take some doing.  Try working him up to it gradually.  Do you've a firing range nearby?  Start back a ways from it and walk towards it.  Once he starts showing distress, back off a ways.  Drill him on his commands or play fetch.  After a while, move closer and play fetch again.  Keep working him closer, but don't push him too hard.  Come back another day and work closer.  You may not get it done in a week, but keep at it.
