Question
Labman I have a golden retreiver male 1yr 2months. He has not been neutered because we do plan on breeding him. We have had him at obedience traing but we cannot seem to be able to control him on the lead he constantly pulls and jumps up. We have tried the choke chain and have tried the lead which closes the dogs mouth and turns his head but it just does not work. He is walked 3 times daily about 3 miles each time. We have tried all the usual i.e turning, stopping dead, bringing him home etc Help please any advice would be appreciated.

Answer
Some dogs are much more difficult to work with than others.  What did your obedience instructor say?  Did he suggest some to the things that aren't working?  Likely the big problem is that nobody spay/neutered the problem pullers in his pedigree.  Dogs with intractable behavior problems are NOT suitable as breeding stock.  Neuter him now!  It is no cure all, but it prevents him from passing on his problems.  It  should help the pulling problem.

Let the breeder know you are extremely disappointed with the defective dog they sold you.  Also spread the word to anybody you know that is thinking about buying a dog to avoid that breeder.

Being more persistent with your corrections may help too.  go back to the technique where you just stop when he pulls.  He wants to go.  If you move forward when the leash is slack, and stop when he pulls, he should quickly figure out the only way to get to go, is not to pull.  This is about teaching him not to pull, not getting somewhere.  The man that taught it to me said "If in a half hour you haven't made it out to the front walk, fine, you have taught him a lesson.
