My golden retreiver!

Question
Hi my name is Kaycee and I'm 16. I have a golden retriever named Buddy. He is about 5 or 6 and hasn't been neutered. He has always been a very loving and when he was little he used to sleep in my bed with me. Recently he has been growling and barking at me, my little brother & cousins, my mom, my dad, & everyone he has always been around. He gets plenty of exercise because we live out in the country.
We have taken him to the vet twice and he doesn't have rabies(we tested) & he has nothing unusual in his blood work. No physical injuries. He has never bitten anyone. We just need to know if this is unusual and if it can be fixed.

Answer
Neutering him may or may not help much, but I see no good reason not to.  Certainly there are enough Goldens around without agression problems, we don't need to use aggressive one for breeding.  It also reduces his chances of cancer later in life.

With somebody the right age in the family, 4-H dog training is a great idea. In my area, clubs form soon after the first of the year.  Even many urban areas have 4-H.  For info look in your phone book under government listings for extension or cooperative extension offices.  Ask specifically about a dog or canine club.  The dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog.  Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones.  You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class.  A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands a treat.
