Question
I've read many differing accts on whether to exercise GSD pups and how often. We just got our lovely female GS who is now 10 weeks old. We are a very active couple and are wandering how much exercise and what types we should be providing her. online i keep hearing about how dangerous it is to over exercise, yet the vet says its dangerous to under exercise. I'm confused. yet most of the online issues I read about are for pups who are 5 months or older. None seem to address younger ages than this. Am I crazy for wanting to at least walk my 10week old? I did take her out today and she did fine for a 2 block walk. Thanks for any advice.

Answer
Avoid excess running and jumping at that age.  If you go too far on a walk and she starts to lag or just sits down, you can always carry her home.  Do expose her to people, traffic, kids, men, women, noise, etc.  Avoid dogs not known to be healthy.

The period between 6-12 weeks is a dangerous time.  One sniff where a sick dog relieved itself in the last 6 months can bring on parvo or another life threatening disease.  Fail to expose it to strangers, including men, women, children, noise, etc. and you could end up with a misfit you can't take out in public.  They also need continuing contact with other dogs, but it must be limited to ones you know are getting good care.  For help with socialization, see http://www.apdt.com/po/news/docs/Messer_Nov06.pdf
